Changes introduced for parental leave

The changes introduced by the provincial government on Wednesday will allow mothers to take 19 weeks of maternity leave, increasing the amount of time earlier in a week.

78 weeks of full leave will be available for new mothers, or can be shared between parents. Parental leave was also extended from 34 to 59 weeks, not including the 19-week maternity leave.

If parents decide to take the whole leave or are collecting employment insurance, parental leave will increase from 37 to 63 weeks.

Also announced by the government, workers will be allowed 17 weeks of leave to care for severely ill adult relatives as well as a 10-day interpersonal violence permit for survivors of sexual violence.
