Biggest YMCA in the world ready to open with surf simulator, library and ice rinks

The world's largest 300,000 square foot YMCA is scheduled to open in southeast Calgary with a surf simulator, a full surface library and a host of other services.

Most of the center's $ 193 million services, the Brookfield Residential YMCA in Seton at 4995 Market Street S.E., will be open to the public on Monday, but reporters were given a preview on Thursday.

It is being advertised as a community center, complete with a competition-size pool, a surf simulator, two ice rinks, three gyms, a 200-meter racetrack and an art gallery.

"When I think of collective impact and what we are launching here, I see not only an impressive building, but the potential it has for leadership, learning, a sense of community, a sense of belonging, and a better life for all Calgarians," YMCA Calgary president and CEO Shannon Doram told the crowd.

In recent years, the city has spent $ 480 million to open four recreational facilities in areas considered underserved. In 2016, the Remington YMCA in Quarry Park and the Great Plains Recreation Facility opened. In 2018, the Samba Homes YMCA in Rocky Ridge opened.

YMCA will run the Seton facility and cover operating costs, a joint statement said.

The YMCA has a program to help subsidize programs for low-income people. Some services, including the library, will be offered free of charge.

"The Brookfield YMCA in Seton will be a vibrant center built with community and community, a place where no one is rejected and everyone has the opportunity to help build community regardless of their financial circumstances," Doram said.

Most services are open Monday, but the competition and leisure areas are open on March 1st.

The pool is 50 meters with 10 slopes. There is also a water polo pool that is certified for competitions by the International Nataion Federation. Trampolines and diving platforms also meet the competition standards.

There is a water park, a kiddie pool, a lazy river and two water slides too.

The recreation center also houses a theater for 250 people, a center for child care and services for children, a medical clinic and physiotherapy.
