For a significant number of users, iOS 12.1.1 is deleting your mobile data and the only way to get online is via WiFi. I've alerted users to sporadic reports of this in my IOS 12.1.1 Update Guide (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9), but as more users update, the problem seems to be spreading.

Not only am I seeing more reports online, I am also being contacted directly by users who have read my update guide and wanted me to know that the bug also affects them. Interestingly, experience varies according to reports in several countries and the impact may range from partial functionality with mobile data running in the browser, but not in applications, until the total 4G data failure. For example:

"@GordonKelly Sad to report this, but the broken 4G experience is all over my phone. 90% of sites work on 4G mobile data. Apps like Twitter, Amazon and so many others are not working, but all Google-related apps are running smoothly and WhatsApp works too! I'm clueless now. "- source

"@GordonKelly @AppleSupport Same problem for me! 4G in Jio is severely affected. You can not even use an essential application like Uber. "- source

"@AppleSupport Hi, not 4G on any of my devices (iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone XS Max, iPad Pro 12.9 2017) since I upgraded to iOS 12.1.1 last night!" – source

"My recent update to ios 12.1.1 left my phone with mobile data issues. Basically, I can not use mobile data in most of my applications. Kindly harken my complaint @Apple" – source

"Can not use the internet after upgrading my iPhone to the latest iOS 12.1.1." – source

"@AppleSupport After upgrading to iOS 12.1.1, my iPhone is not loading Twitter messages via Mobile Data; I tried reinstalling Twitter. Still, the problem persists. Actually, I'm sending this tweet via Wi-Fi. I need your help. "- source

What is the scale of this? With over a billion iPhones in active use, it's impossible to say, but it's clearly having a considerable impact on multiple users. Also, while I've seen @AppleSupport repeatedly recommend that affected users update their carrier settings, this will not bring much relief:

"@AppleSupport Updating operator settings, hardware reset, etc. does not solve the problem with using mobile data after upgrading iOS 12.1.1!" – source

Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of this bug, however, is that iOS 12.1.1 beta testers had reported the problem already& nbsp; but clearly still reached the official launch.

Consequently, I would recommend to all who still need to upgrade to iOS 12.1.1 to do this with caution. With any minority problem, the odds are on your side that you will escape unharmed, but those who are affected are hit by one of the worst problems that a smartphone owner can have.

This is a shame, since iOS 12.1.1 is one of Apple's most stable updates at some point and contains some significant new features. So it all depends if you want to roll the dice …
