A major change was announced by Apple, as its retail boss Angela Ahrendts, is leaving the company in April "for new personal and professional activities."

His replacement will be Deirdre O'Brien, a 30-year veteran of Apple, taking on the expanded dual role as senior vice president of Retail + People, reporting to CEO Tim Cook.

"At Apple, we believe that our soul is our people, and Deirdre understands the qualities and strengths of our team better than anyone else," said Tim Cook, Apple's CEO. "For more than three decades, it has helped keep Apple focused on serving customers and enriching lives. She is an exceptional leader and is a vital partner to the retail teams across the world from the start. I am very happy to work alongside Deirdre in her new role, and I know our 70,000 retail employees will be there as well. "

O'Brien said: "It's the opportunity of a lifetime to work and learn from such a talented, diverse and imaginative team. I look forward to this journey and to continue the important work of the People team in supporting all of Apple's incredible employees. "

Cook thanked Ahrendts for her five years at Apple, saying, "It has been a positive and transformative force for both Apple stores and the communities they serve. We all wish her the best when she starts a new chapter. "

"The last five years have been the most stimulating, challenging and rewarding of my career. Through the team's collective efforts, retailing has never been stronger or better positioned to make an even greater contribution to Apple, "said Ahrendts, who was previously CEO of Burberry. She was hired by Apple in October 2013.

Apple says it currently has 35 online stores and 506 Apple stores on five continents around the world.
