CALGARY – Alberta's health minister says the province is expanding nurses' ability to prescribe medications and order X-rays.
Sarah Hoffman says the government will introduce new rules that will allow registered nurses to prescribe medications at travel clinics as part of sexually transmitted infection programs and at workplace health and safety clinics.
Registered nurses may not prescribe drugs and controlled substances.
Hoffman says that nursing professionals, who may already prescribe medications, may now also define bone fractures.
Dennie Hycha, president of the Alberta College of Nursing and Registered Nurses Association, sees changes as a milestone for registered nursing.
Hycha says the changes mean people will have better access to medicines and tests when they need them.
Hoffman praised nurses for their vital role in health care.
"I am proud that our government is supporting nurses to use their knowledge and first-line training to help Albertans get the care they need sooner and closer to home," she said in a statement on Friday.
