Syfy canceled the zombie drama after five seasons. The season finale of December 28 will now serve as the series finale. Syfy confirmed its decision to close the series after producer David Michael Latt first announced the news in a video in social media.
While The Asylum series is ending, the franchise will remain alive and well, while Netflix has picked up eight episodes of Z Nation prequel Black Summer, starring Jaime King (Hart of Dixie).
Never an escape from ratings – Z NationThe latest episode brought 430,000 viewers live on the same day – the drama starring Kellita Smith, DJ Qualls and Keith Allan was a low-risk coup for Syfy, making it easier to keep the series running for almost 70 episodes.
In his post, Latt expressed sadness at the end of Z Nation but called Black summer "Just the beginning of many things."
Meanwhile, Syfy has made some great swings, including George R.R. Martin's Nightflyers and, arriving in 2019, Dead class as well as return scripted originals Channel Zero, the final season of Killjoys, Van Helsing, Wynonna Earp, Happy, Crypt, The Purge and lively night of entry Alien News Desk.
