Aspirin for many years has been considered by many as a miracle drug that will protect them from cardiovascular disease, even from some types of cancer. That is why millions of people in the world, guided by this illusion, take the drug every day. This confirms a new meta-analysis in which a team of British scientists gathered and studied in detail the results and data from several previous studies. In their findings, scientists at King's College in London have clarified whether daily intake of small doses of aspirin is beneficial to health or can be dangerous.

Millions of people around the world take aspirin "prophylactically," convinced that they reduce the risk of myocardial infarction or stroke. Many of the studies done so far show that this drug has different benefits and disadvantages for healthy people.

Experts say now that for healthy people, the benefit of aspirin to the cardiovascular system is largely offset by the risk of bleeding, especially in the brain and intestines.

"There is no reason for healthy people to take aspirin prophylactically," says cardiologist Sean Chien of Kings College London, who heads the study.

"The results show that there is a real risk to health. People should not take aspirin with the idea that this medicine is completely harmless," he adds.

"A single cardiovascular problem will be avoided among 265 people who take 5 years of aspirin, but one in 210 patients who take aspirin will have a heavy bleeding," said the author of this study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

And while the cardiologist agrees that these data appear to be relatively insignificant, they are globally viewed and analyzed nationally, they obtain radically different values ‚Äč‚Äčthat make them quite significant.
