Deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PSL-RJ) announced on Tuesday night (22), in a speech in the House plenary, that he has given up his appointment to occupy the post of Brazil's ambassador in the States.
The congressman made the announcement in the House plenary, during the vote of the bill that confirms the terms of the agreement between Brazil and the United States for the use by the Americans of the rocket launching base of Alcântara, in Maranhão.
On Monday (21), in Japan, President Jair Bolsonaro said he would prefer his son to remain in Brazil to "pacify" the PSL, which is experiencing an internal crisis.
In July, Bolsonaro stated for the first time that he intended to appoint the deputy to the embassy. Since then, Eduardo Bolsonaro has visited senators to get support for the nomination, which needs to be approved by the Senate. But it faced resistance from parliamentarians, and the government was never assured that it would have enough votes to approve the nomination.
The situation became even more difficult with the outbreak of the PSL crisis, especially after an audio revealed a telephone conversation by Jair Bolsonaro in which he allegedly asked for support for his son to take over as PSL leader in the House.
“It was a decision I was thinking for a long time. We listen to advice from many people. Also, there's the question of my electorate. I confess, it was not the majority who were backing there, ”argued the congressman, in an interview with journalists shortly after the speech. “It would be a role to play, but here in Brazil, too, I think I have a role as important as or maybe more,” he said.
The congressman said he did not make the decision to give up the nomination in response to a possible request by President Jair Bolsonaro.
“No, the president has always made me comfortable about that. I confess that when my name came out, when I was nominated, I was even surprised, I didn't expect it to happen. At first I was happy yes, obviously. Who does not feel prestigious to assume this position? However, throughout the process, with maturity, conversations, etc., it made me think and culminated today with this decision, ”he said.
In the plenary speech, the MP called the embassy in Washington "a key post" in international diplomacy. He also mentioned the history of relations between Brazil and the United States. "To be close to the United States is to be on the side of good diplomacy," he said.
The congressman cited the case of former ambassador Tilden Santiago, appointed by former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in 2003 to the Brazilian embassy in Cuba. He said Santiago was nominated after losing the Senate election.
“Ambassador is someone who represents Brazil abroad. And if a politician who could not get elected was to represent the whole group of Brazilians abroad, what about the most voted deputy in the history of the country? Certainly I would not lack legitimacy, and this is a fact that depends on interpretations, "said Eduardo Bolsonaro, who said he remained in Brazil to" defend conservative principles. "
President Jair Bolsonaro is in Japan and was asked about Eduardo's announcement. For him, the son will have a "tremendous responsibility" as new leader of the PSL. Commenting on the subject, he added, "Congratulations to him."
"There was a possibility that I could nominate him to the Senate, it was not guaranteed, it would depend on a sabbath. I was talking to him, and from the moment he accepted to be party leader, he now has tremendous responsibility there. Congratulations to him on this decision. And who knows, in the future, we will come back to this issue? But I think that, at least next year, we will not discuss this issue, "said Bolsonaro.
On Friday, Eduardo Bolsonaro was confirmed again in the leadership of the PSL, after the General Secretariat of the House Bureau validated a list of signatures of party bench members in support of his post.
Asked if taking office was decisive in his decision to resign from the embassy, he said: “Leadership in principle goes until the end of the year. That was not the determining factor, no, ”he said.
Eduardo Bolsonaro also said he should not run for another year in the position of leader in December.
“I confess that I have no desire to be a leader. I would stay if it was a mission. If colleagues ask for acclamation, that's fine, but it's not something I want, ”he said.
