A 2-month-old baby died Sunday afternoon (27), in Xanxerê, in western Santa Catarina, with suspected meningitis, according to the city hall. The State Central Laboratory (Lacen) must confirm the cause of death between Monday (28) and Tuesday (29), still according to the municipal administration.
The child was hospitalized at the Hospital Regional São Paulo and was a native of Ponte Serrada, also in the West. The hospital confirmed that the baby died at 4 pm Sunday.
At the hospital, material was collected for analysis at Lacen, responsible for diagnosing the disease. Epidemiological Surveillance was also informed about the case.
Meningitis affects the victim's nervous system. According to the city of Xanxerê, with the result, it will also be possible to determine if there was a case of meningitis caused by viruses, fungi or bacteria.
The city's Municipal Health Department also reported that if a positive result is obtained, a prophylactic procedure will be done with the parents and people who have had the most contact with the baby.
