Predictions of bad weather on Thursday left the Carinthian authorities alarmed. The crisis team convened after the Central Institute of Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) predicted large amounts of precipitation and foehn storms. The association began in the afternoon with decreasing levels in the Drau reservoirs.
Gerhard Hohenwarter of ZAMG expects heavy rains on Thursday, especially in the west of the country, where it will partially snow to the lowlands. In the east, the snow limit is expected to rise to about 1,500 meters, which will make it rain. As a result, the amount of water flowing into the Drava can be significantly greater than purely due to precipitation. "So we started as a precaution with reducing water levels in the three large Drau reservoirs by Friday morning, the water level will be about one meter lower," said Verbund spokesman Robert Zechner to the APA.
If and to what extent new reduction measures will be needed, will be seen on Friday. According to the competent regional council member Daniel Fellner (SPÖ), the crisis team must meet again to discuss further measures. If the Föhnsturm, indeed, as strong as feared, is also expected for power outages and traffic obstructions by fallen trees. With a soothing climate in the southernmost state, meteorologists wait only on Sunday.
Fresh snow on Friday
The Italian plain "Pirmin" brings snow in abundance in eastern Tyrol, Upper Carinthia and the Alpine mountain range. From Friday evening and Saturday must be there in a short time, locally, even within 24 hours, up to a meter of fresh snow. In the remaining southwest 50-80 cm come to it. On the northern side of the Alps, however, it heats up. A hair dryer provides two digits plus degrees.
