Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko opened the second European Games shortly after midnight on Saturday (local time) in Minsk. The celebration at Dinamo Stadium showed many parallels with Olympia with the completion of a torch relay and the lighting of the arena.
The 22,000 spectators greeted the authoritarian Lukashenko, who is also chairman of the National Olympic Committee of Belarus, with cautious applause. As of June 30, nearly 4,000 athletes from 50 nations compete in 15 sports. Of Austria, 56 active athletes are in the beginning. Institutionalized like other continental championships such as the Asian or Pan-American Games, the event is not yet in place after its 2015 debut in Azerbaijan, but acceptance seems to be growing slowly.
