Tokyo / Kyoto (APA) – Nintendo has cut its sales forecast for the video game console exchange despite a strong Christmas season. The Japanese game specialist sold about 9.4 million switching devices in the last quarter. But the original goal of selling 20 million consoles by the end of March was no longer possible.
After nine months, Nintendo is only 14.5 million. Now the forecast has been reduced to 17 million devices. Even so, Nintendo is in competition with Sony's Playstation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One, still very good.
The good change in demand left Nintendo with a profit of 104.9 billion yen (838.7 million euros) at the box office in the Christmas quarter, almost a quarter more than a year ago. Sales grew 26 percent to the yen 608.4 billion.
The failure of the previous console "Wii U" had already dipped the company temporarily in red and a crisis. With the switch, which can be used both at home on the TV and on the road, the traditional company has succeeded again but a success. Since its market launch in March 2017, about 32.3 units have been sold.
Nintendo has also postponed the launch of the first smartphone game "Mario Kart" for the summer of this Thursday, which is expected to begin by the end of March. The company had plenty of time to make their popular game characters only on their own devices available. But with the rise of smartphone games that slowed sales of the 3DS mobile console, Nintendo has reversed itself. Among other things, there is already a game "Super Mario" for the smartphone. Meanwhile, sales of 3DS consoles dropped from just under 5.9 to 2.3 million units in the first nine months of the fiscal year.
