Muse d'Orsay renames works

For a new exhibition at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, masterpieces by artists such as Manet, Matisse, Picasso or Cézanne were renamed after their black models.

For example, Manet's famous painting, "Olympia", was renamed "Laure" for the show opened on Tuesday – after the black woman who is seen as a maid in the background. For the exhibition "The Black Model – From Gericault to Matisse," curators have done extensive research to discover the names of black models. Although blacks played an important role in the emergence of modern art in Paris, their names were ignored and their influence in the history of art was overshadowed by racism and stereotypes, explained curator Denise Murrell.
