In short: "Yes, uniform autumn holidays are coming"

Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) confirmed on Wednesday that the government will create autumn holidays in Austria: "Yes, there will be uniform autumn holidays," he said after the Council of Ministers. No matter how you do it, there will always be excitement, but you will still make the decision, he assured her. Different autonomous days have caused care problems for many parents.

Start in 2020 with ten days off

According to plans by Education Minister Heinz Fassmann (ÖVP), the first national fall holidays between October 26 and November 2 in the 2020/21 school year take place – and the premiere occurs due to favorable fall holidays equivalent to 10 days off. This will be taught on the two Tuesdays after Easter and Pentecost, also fall two school day autonomous away.

The duration of the new autumn holidays is variable – similar to Christmas holidays – variable from the beginning with the National Day on October 26th and the end with All Souls (November 2) every year on a different day of the week. Depending on an earlier or later weekend, it's still free.

However, new holidays come with a price: depending on the fall of the national holiday, in October there will be three to five days off (in most constellations, there are four). However, as the number of non-school days per school year should not change, so far no lesson has been taken. On the one hand, these are the two Tuesdays after Easter or Pentecost. The remainder, from three to three days, are won by the cancellation of the days of autonomous school, in which are used, first, the two days, determined centrally by the respective direction of education. Currently there are four days in compulsory schools and five in colleges.

For the 2020/21 school year, this means: As the national holiday falls on Monday, holidays start on the previous Saturday (October 24) and last through November 2, also on Monday. Therefore, four days have to be released (27 to 31 October) – this means that the lessons will be taught after Easter (April 6, 2021) and Whitsuntide (May 25, 2021), as well as the two boards of education. given "school-autonomous" days away.

That leaves 2020/21 in compulsory schools two and in colleges three autonomous days that can freely forgive – for example, to give the two Friday Fridays free after the Ascension and Corpus Christi or even extend the holidays of the Pentecost again.

Good Friday: Short promises effort to find a good solution

In short, it was not possible to see the cards on Wednesday about how the government plans to deal with the ECJ's decision on Good Friday. An effort will be made to find a "legally compatible and good solution," and once there is one, they will be presented to the public, Kurz said.

There was a good conversation yesterday between the minister responsible Gernot Blümel (ÖVP) and Protestant Bishop Michael Bünker, Kurz recalled. He could not extract anything else.

Blümel reiterated to the reporters before the government meeting that they would take nothing from anyone, but they did not want any additional burden. "The conversations are happening." One solution will be "as fast as possible" – until Good Friday, April 19, you really need one.

The Court of Justice of the European Communities (ECJ) considers it discriminatory that Good Friday is only a public holiday for members of certain religious communities. Since then, it has been struggling to find solutions to how the holiday, which is important to Protestants, but also to Methodists and old Catholics, can be preserved.
