Cancer In Children: Know the Causes and Reasons

A team of researchers has shed light on the community's beliefs about what causes cancer in children, an area that remains little studied, finds a more recent research.

"Few childhood cancers are attributed to genetic or environmental factors, so when children are diagnosed with cancer, families often wonder" why me / why do we? " said lead author Janine Vetsch, a postdoctoral research candidate at UNSW Sydney in Australia.

For the study, the team examined the beliefs of more than 600 participants – parents and survivors of childhood cancer – about the causes of childhood cancer, and compared them with beliefs of 510 members of the general population.

The findings, published in Acta Oncologica, revealed that more than seven out of 10 survivors of childhood cancer and parents of survivors believed that bad luck or bad luck caused cancer.

This led most parents and survivors seem to understand that there is nothing they could have done to prevent cancer, according to Vetsch.

However, about one in five families believed that environmental factors and genetics played a role, though only limited scientific evidence available, showed additional results.

"It appears that health professionals are helping most families to achieve this vision," said Vetsch.

Such visions can lead to stigma. It is therefore important to raise community awareness about the causes of childhood cancer in general.

There is a need to encourage doctors to talk about causes with affected families to deal with pointless misconceptions, "Vetsch suggested.
