An Australian mother has revealed how she spends only $ 80 a week to feed her family of four children and their two pets.

Kylie Gough of Adelaide has posted receipts from her biweekly store at a popular savings forum this week, revealing how her grocery bill came to just $ 161.44.

In the post, Kylie explained that she was shopping fortnightly for herself, her husband, her two children, six and three, as well as the cat and the family dog.

For just $ 161, Kylie bought enough food to prepare and make all her own breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks for two weeks.

"It will be necessary to complete the milk and bread only next week, maybe another $ 10," she wrote.

"Very happy with my effort."

The post generated a lot of support from other mothers who claimed they would like to stop spending more on their grocery store.

"That's impressive, I'm between $ 500 and $ 600 a fortnight with two adults, one a year and a four," one woman wrote.

"Husband and I are trying very hard to reduce the food bill, but failing miserably."

Speaking to news.com.au, Kylie said she started planning and budgeting two years ago, after the family income has drastically reduced.

"I took about $ 100k of cutting when I changed jobs, so I had no choice but to make changes in the way I was spending," Kylie said.

"I just tried to budget our lives to fit the amount of money I was getting."

The mother of two children has since changed jobs, but says she still loves the challenge of saving money for her family every fortnight.

"I spend between $ 150 and $ 180 on purchases every week, depending on what's needed," she said.

Most of the comments in the post were from mothers asking how she had managed to spend so little to feed such a large family.

"Wow, I'm doing something wrong," one mother wrote.

"It's me for two days in our local Foodland (supermarket)," lamented another woman.

Shaving the dollars from her grocery bill gave Kylie a huge thrill because that money can be spent on her two kids on the track.

MAKE A PLAN

Every fortnight, Kylie sits down to create a dinner plan for her family.

"For example, I plan to make a lasagna so that there is enough for two meals and lunches the next day," she said.

"If I buy a chook roast, I use the leftovers to create a new meal, and I answer for it in my meal plan as well."

She also makes cakes and cakes for her children's school meals.

BUY IN LARGE QUANTITIES

Kylie says that "buying in bulk is an important part of the budget" successfully.

Her receipts show that she buys many frozen vegetables to be added to most meals during the fortnight.

Most of the ingredients she buys are the cheapest brand from Coles.

She will look for cheaper meat cuts, such as a 1kg bbq package, or cuts that are on sale that week.

"I buy a lot of vegetables that are in the season because they are always cheaper," she said.

Kylie also lives near a Bellis food factory outlet, which she says is a perfect place for her to buy cheap snacks for her children.

"I go there and spend almost nothing stocking on salty snacks like dried fruits, nuts and bars," she said.

COOK AND SHOP

Kylie said she has done much of her own cooking to save on costs and packaging, which is harmful to the environment.

"I cook things like sliced ​​rice or Weet-Bix slices for the kids to snack on," she said.

"It's cheap and easy to do."

She also said having a "meatless meal every week" is a great way to cut costs.

STOCK UP

Kylie grows some of her own vegetables at home, which lowers costs.

"I also have meat, corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkin and carrot in the freezer and pantry to use when I need it," she said.
