Scientists Capture Live-Level Atomic Levels of Nanoparticle Formation

Scientists from the US Department of Energy's Sensitive Instrument Facility have performed the monitoring of real-time atom rearrangements using aberration-corrected scan transmission electron microscopy during the synthesis of intermetallic nanoparticles (iNPs).

In collaboration with Wenyu Huang, an associate professor in the Department of Chemistry at Iowa State University and Ames Laboratory scientist, they examined nanoparticles made of a platinum-tin alloy. These unique iNPs have energy-efficient fuel conversion and biofuel production applications, and are one of the focus of the Huang research group.

"In the formation of these materials, much information was lacking in the medium that is useful to us for a great adjustment of the catalytic properties," said Huang.

By tracing the movement of platinum and tin metal atoms during the formation of iNPs using advanced high temperature microscopy, intermediate phases were discovered with their own unique set of catalytic properties.

"Conventional material synthesis concentrates at the beginning and end of a reaction without much understanding of the path. Atomic-level observation of the alloy process has led to the discovery of the reaction path," said Lin Zhou, Ames Laboratory. of Sciences and Engineering of Materials. "Once we know intermediate states in the middle, we could control the reaction to stop at that point, which opens up a new way to predict and control our discovery of new materials."
