A team from NASA and MIT created a new type of airplane wing – and this could make air travel much more efficient.

In an article published in the journal Smart materials and structures on Monday, researchers describe how they built an airplane wing from hundreds of identical, lightweight cube-like structures, all screwed together and then covered with a thin polymer material.

The design allows the wing to automatically change, adjusting to any setting that is ideal for the current phase of the flight – with a takeoff setting, for example, and another for landing.

Bigger and better

The wing the researchers created and tested for the new paper is about the same size as you would find on a single-seater plane, according to MIT News, but they have already demonstrated the feasibility of their smaller wing design for several years. .

This new wing not only shows that the concept scales to a size that could carry a person, but also demonstrates a new manufacturing process that reduces the time required to produce each individual structure from several minutes to just 17 seconds.

"Research shows promise to reduce costs and increase the performance of large, lightweight, and rigid structures," said Daniel Campbell, of Aurora Flight Sciences, who did not participate in the survey, to MIT News.

"The most promising short-term applications are structural applications for aircraft and space structures, such as antennas."
