Kia launches new Cerato GT and Picanto GT in Australia

Inspired by the success of its Stinger fastback sedan, Kia introduced a pair of stable athletes.

Kia takes out its "get mean" theme with the Cerato GT turbocharged in hatch and sedan disguise with a price tag of $ 31,990.

Packed with a kit, and with a firmer suspension and sharper steering enhanced by Australian engineers, the goal is to offer a "warm-up" experience.

is accompanied by a manual-only Picanto GT powered by a 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbo for $ 17,990.

The previous Kia hatch, the Proceed three-door manual of 2014, was taken from the showrooms after a slow sales performance.

The brand has almost doubled sales over the last four years to become Australia's No. 7 seller. That is why the head of Kia Australia, Damien Meredith, believes that the right time for a robbery to the GT.

"We are in a much more robust position with the brand and public acceptance," he says.

"I think Stinger was incredibly vital. Stinger was successful in Australia because when you look at private sales, we sell more cars a few months than the Holden Commodore. "

Externally, the Cerato GT stands out with a body kit with black skirts, mesh grille with red accents, 18-inch alloys and dual exhausts. Sedans also get a spoiler.

In the cabin, it has sporting alloy pedals and smooth leather sport steering wheel with gearshift.

The standard gear includes driver's seat with eight-way adjustment and two memory positions (front seats are also heated and ventilated), eight-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay / Android Auto with voice recognition, wireless charger, air conditioning and audio JBL Premium eight speakers with Bluetooth connectivity and a subwoofer at startup.

White ink comes at no extra cost. There is a $ 520 prize for the other nine options: white pearl, silver, gray, graphite, two shades of blue, black, red and an orange exclusive from the GT.

Ceratos get a split accident rating due to different levels of autonomous emergency braking. The GT gets five stars, as the AEB uses a camera and radars to detect cyclists and pedestrians (some basic models use only the camera).

Other safety equipment includes radar cruise control, frontal collision warning, lane assistant, rear view camera with dynamic guidelines, driver attention alert warning, and front and rear parking sensors.

The Picanto GT comes with four-speaker audio, smartphone mirroring, body kit and dual outputs. Premium color options are silver, black and red.

ON THE ROAD

The straight-line ability of the Cerato GT is rewarding without being neck-snapping.

The combination of 1.6-liter four-cylinder turbocharged and seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is used by sister company Hyundai in its i30 N Line derivative (although this version is $ 34,990 more roads).

Kia has set out to develop a more sporty Cerato, so the ride is particularly strong for cornering.

"From the point of view of an engineer, I would love the car to have adaptive damping (suspension), but the market price does not allow that," says Graeme Gambold, Kia's Australian engineering chief.

Faced with the decision about whether to make a comfort car or a sports car, he says, "we were the direction of sports."

The GT has a wide ability to carve corners, as it is 5 mm below the standard of the Cerato, it gains bigger front brakes and it is footwear with the rubber Michelin Pilot Sport 4.

In place of a more conventional torsion beam rear suspension, there is a more sophisticated independent rear configuration.

Under the power there is a strange note of escape – Kia artificially increases the soundtrack under the power. The gravel note has no athletics.

The Picanto amplifies the fun factor, but instead of cutting down rural roads, it makes mincemeat of the urban jungle. The 1.0 liter three-cylinder engine is happy at work and the manual transmission allows the driver to explore the spin range.

VERDICT

Kia enters sacred territory, using the VW Golf GTI and the Peugeot 308 GTI as primary benchmarks. The Cerato GT brings a lot of kit and performance for the money, but the commitment is a steady ride. For those looking for a four-wheel motorcycle, the Picanto GT is a good choice – as long as you're prepared to change gears.
