Inside the mind of the Perth mass murderer father who killed his wife and three children

To the outside world, killer father Anthony Robert Harvey looked like a hardworking husband and loving father to three beautiful young daughters.

But behind closed doors, he was an abusive layman who blew $ 300 a week on drugs and longed to get rid of the family he thought was "tightening his style."

The day after Father's Day 2018, he massacred his wife Mara Harvey, 41, his mother Beverley Quinn, 74, and Charlotte, three, and the twins Beatrix and Alice, two.

Harvey, 24, pleaded guilty to five counts of homicide in April and his sentencing hearings begin today in a Perth court.

His unthinkable crimes shocked Australia and left friends, family and neighbors desperately seeking answers about why he did it.

Months after the September 3 and 4 killings, Harvey's close friends revealed signs of the family's downward spiral.

"Anthony was lazy, drunk and tall and wanted to spend all his time having fun and having fun instead of being a father," one of them told Daily Mail Australia.

He thought [his wife and children] were tightening their style.

Unlike appearances, Harvey "disliked" his daughters and in numerous bouts with his wife stated that he wanted to get rid of them.

"He said he wanted to get rid of her and the girls, that they were holding him back from happiness and no one cared about him."

The couple met in 2013 while working in hospitality at the Sino Steel mine in Cape Preston, northwest Western Australia.

Mrs. Harvey has saved her mining wages and purchased several investment properties in Perth to make her financially secure.

They decided to settle in the suburb of Bedford and she bought a Jim's Mowing franchise so that Mr. Harvey did not have to get an unskilled job.

Mr. Harvey proposed a few months before Charlotte was born in February 2015 and, at first, to be a proud father.

However, Harvey's friends said that the radiant smile he showed on a picture of him cradling the newborn soon disappeared.

"Anthony did not deal well with the responsibility of being the breadwinner and hated the baby being so late," one of them said.

"He really did not want to be a father."

The situation worsened progressively, but Harvey thought that another baby would unite them, and she wanted a big family.

Beatrix and Alice were born in late 2016 and Harvey did not react well to the unexpected arrival of two babies at the same time.

The once solid finances of the family were also falling while the cutting business was slow and Miss. Harvey took a break from work to take care of the children.

"They had a big cushion because Mara saved a lot and was very frugal, but babies were expensive and business was not going well because he never wanted to work, and she had the baby to take care of," friends said.

Mrs. Harvey controlled finances to keep her husband from spending so much money and giving her money every week.

He resented this, calling the weekly sheet his "allowance," and resorted to stealing money from his purse.

In the last years of their marriage, friends say he was drinking heavily and spending $ 300 a week feeding a habit of marijuana and methamphetamine.

"He was spending so much on drugs that her mother had to buy food," they said.

"Mara's mother was stressed while she spent her money making sure the children were fed and clothed.

Quinn was home almost every day to help with the children and was murdered by Mr. Harvey when she arrived the morning after her daughter and granddaughter died.

"Anthony hated that Mara was receiving help from her mother and that her mother was there," friends said.

He did not like her family. His family did not like him, so he accused them of joining him.

Mr. Harvey became controlling and emotionally abusive, running his wife's phone and insisting on going with her whenever he left.

"She was definitely afraid of him. He was a furious drunkard and very unpredictable. She spent a lot of time calming down, friends said.

He was very controlling but everything seemed super loving – as if he just wanted to help and take care of her.

"Mara rarely let it appear that things were not right, she was definitely trying to keep things as normal as possible for the children."

They said that on several occasions, Mrs. Harvey suspected that her husband was cheating, but he always turned around and accused her of being unfaithful.

Despite all this, the neighbors never suspected that something was wrong, as the couple seemed happy and the sounds of children playing filled the street, which otherwise was quiet.

On Father's Day, they had lunch, played in the sun and the children ran between a swing in the yard and a slippery dip.

The next day, Ms. Harvey left Charlotte in day care and went to his night shift at a local Coles, while mr. Harvey sent e-mails to customers-as usual.

However, shortly after arriving home after 11.30 pm, Mr. Harvey killed his wife and daughters with knives and blunt instruments.

Mrs. Harvey was killed in the kitchen and the girls in other rooms in the house. Quinn was murdered next to her daughter's body.

The insensitive killer is believed to have taken his white ute and Jim's trailer to complete two jobs hours later, as if nothing had happened.

He stayed in the house for several days while the bodies simply lay on floors stained with blood and furniture where he left them.

Harvey then drove 1,400 kilometers north to Pannawonica, where he has family, and surrendered to police on 9 September.

After he was interviewed, police arrived at the family home and found the bodies decaying.

Some policemen were so horrified by what they saw that they were seen crying and holding their head on the front lawn.

Mr. Harvey never explained why he killed his family. He only spoke a few words in all of his appearances in court before pleading guilty.

Quinn's sisters, Maureen Devereux and Wendy Frost, broke out of court days after Harvey's arrest, begging for an explanation.

"I can not even put my head in the mind of a killer to try to figure out why. Why would you kill babies? I do not understand this, why would you kill babies? Frost said.

"I just want to know why – we all want to know why."

Mr. Harvey is going on Friday to start his doom hearings, and hopefully the painful questions will finally be answered.
