Google Pixel 3a Fuccs

Google Pixel 3 was a controversial device when it was released last year.

A good phone to be sure, but the price was a touch high for incremental updates to what Pixel 2 was already packing.

But Google was not done. Last month, it got hot with its lite version of the device. Not only are the specs ridiculously similar to your larger siblings, just like the camera. Oh and the battery is better.

In one fell swoop, Google fucked the mid-sized phone market. In fact, you might even have fucked up the high range. It redefined what consumers should expect for $ 650 and thus threw the landscape of the phone into a glorious chaos. And I, for one, love it.

Google Pixel 3 is robust AF

Something you should know about me is that I'm clumsy. One of the nicknames my parents gave me during childhood was "Super Spiller." The other was "Possum." I've never been able to shake any of the nicknames. My penchant for dropping shit transitions into adulthood, and resulted in a myriad of cracked and soaked phones over the years. Yes, I even dropped an iPhone 4 in a bathroom once. Okay, twice. When it comes to gadgets, I'm a walking stress test – a fact that was reinforced when I recently picked up a Google Pixel 3 XL on an 18-kilometer walk in the Blue Mountains.

Just the specs, please

Much like Google's Pixel 3, the 3rd comes in regular and XL versions.

The 3rd is a bit smaller, with an OLED display of 5.6 inches and 2160 x 1080, with the XL coming in at 6 inches.

They also have almost the same cameras – 12.2 MP in the rear and a self-tier 8MP selfie camera. But we'll get to that.

When it comes to internal specs, you'll find a Snapdragon 670 processor (a downgrade of the 845 that is in the 3 and 3 XL), plus 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage.

The batteries are larger than the standard variants of the Pixel 3, with the 3a featuring 3,000mAH and the 3rd 3,700mAH XL.

Most important of all – it has a headset. It's at the top, which seems strange nowadays, but I accept it.

What's good about this?

The highlight feature of the 3rd is the camera, which is almost the same as the regular 3 and 3 XL, minus the second front camera and some other small specs.

Although I still rate the Huawei P30 pro higher, this thing does an incredible job. And for $ 650 it's a ridiculous god to get.

Here are some regular photos:

When it comes to the front camera, 3rd is a good level of black magic. It looks particularly nice when you appear in portrait mode, which activates the bokeh effect in the background.

To be fair, bokeh can be a success and a failure. As you can see above, lost some of the fake leopard jacket on the back of my chair. I have discovered that the opposite can also happen, with parts of my hair getting blurred when I have it.

It's not perfect at all, but I'm still amazed at how good everyone looks in the eyes of that selfie camera. I do not even hate my photos without makeup. And for $ 650, I can forgive some imperfections when it comes to bokeh in portrait mode.

Night Sight is also impressive. While Huawei's P30 Pro may be dominating the night mode in 2019, 3a still does an incredible job of combining five frames being photographed in different exposures and combining them together.

Here are some examples I have received:

If you're worried about zooming, the 3a fits when you zoom in 2-5x (depending on subject and lighting conditions), but do not expect miracles. The 3a relies on the software for your zoom and therefore can only do a lot

Battery life

The battery life in 3rd is slightly better than 3 and 3XL. I discovered that I finished most days with about 30% of battery and this with bluetooth, heavy use, etc. As someone who lives in a perpetual state of paranoia with the battery of the phone, I was satisfied.
I would say that most people will comfortably have a full day of battery life, maybe a day and a half, depending on their usage.

That's nice

Despite its plastic finish, the Pixel 3a still looks premium.

Although I'm a bit disappointed that the Purpleish version is not coming to Australia, the Simply White version still looks adorable and does not have the cheap feel that some plastic chassis may have.

Although it took me some time to get used to such a lightweight device again, I thought it would be a nice change from some of the flagship flagships of 2019, especially the 5G models I've been testing lately.

My only criticism is that Google continues Pixel's tradition of making the lock button fluorescent. I hate it with the fire of a thousand suns, but I know it's a very personal choice. Most of the people I'm talking to type.

Do not hate if you love it.

What is not so good about it?

Processor speed

Downgrading from Snapdragon 845 to 670 means that the processing speed is a bit slower. Most of the time, you probably will not realize this, but I've found a certain delay between taking pictures sometimes, especially when changing the photo mode or device orientation.

While this is certainly not a business breaker (again, look at that price) I've occasionally found it boring when I'm trying to get a lot of shots.

No water resistance

Earlier this year, I wrote about how the Google Pixel 3a is a robust AF. I discovered this as I walked through the Blue Mountains and then dropped them into muddy puddles. I also did this as an additional stress test:

It was good both times, and I was very impressed.

Unfortunately, the Pixel 3a does not have the same IP68 rating, which is a shame because it is one of my favorite features.

But then again, it's a mid-range phone, so I can not get too crazy.

Should you buy it?

I'm not your real dad, so I do not want to tell you what to do with your life.

But at a time when some really average specs are costing more than $ 1,000 and the best are up to $ 2,500 – Google Pixel 3a is an extremely good buy.

If you are someone who wants something a bit more than a basic phone, but does not want to sell a kidney for a big name flagship – this could be your answer.

Of course, it's not perfect, but it gets the two most important elements of the consumer – the camera and the battery life.

No one had offered such good specs until the launch of the Huawei P30 Lite a few weeks ago. We'll let you know our verdict about once we finish the test.

Even so, it is difficult to recommend a Huawei device (however good it is) until there is more clarity about what is happening with Google Ban.

When it comes to that, Google has done something absolutely unique with the pricing strategy around Pixel 3a. Changed the game and it's about bloody time.
