The Ministry of Health reported that three children in the Capiatá area had a positive result in the rapid hantavirus test. Two other minors from the same city have symptoms of the disease.
One of the children is hospitalized in intensive therapy of the Institute of Tropical Medicine and the other two are with outpatient treatment. All tested positive for the rapid hantavirus test.
Blood samples were sent to a laboratory in Buenos Aires for official confirmation of the disease and to know what type of hantavirus the affected carry.
Two other minors are being monitored because they have symptoms such as fever and malaise, although they may also be dengue, they said in the health portfolio.
Hantavirus is a disease that is transmitted to humans through the saliva, feces or urine of rodents, after inhaling the excreta that rise with the dust. They are frequent in the West Region or Chaco, mainly in the departments of Boquerón and Presidente Hayes.
Its usual symptoms are fever, nausea, vomiting, cough, headache, abdominal pain and shortness of breath, which occur up to 45 days after exposure to the transmitting agents.
The Ministry of Health highlights as preventive measures to prevent the spread of this disease that rodents should be eliminated from homes, taking care not to trap them live in traps or touch them with their hands. Also keep the places clean and fresh, especially the tanks. Avoiding contact with rodents, storing food stored properly and disposing of the waste correctly are other recommendations.
Another of the suggestions of the Ministry is to present symptoms and have visited the areas of transmission of the virus, it is necessary to go to the doctor to perform the relevant tests.
