Mexican researchers were able to eliminate 100% of the human papillomavirus in 29 women


Researchers at the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) tested with molecular studies the elimination of 100% of human papillomavirus (HPV), focused on the cervix of 29 women in Mexico City.

The scientist of the National School of Biological Sciences (ENCB), Eva Ramón Gallegos, explained that they used photodynamic therapy, a non-invasive technique that, in addition to eradicating HPV (the pathogenic agent that is the main cause of cervical cancer), eliminates pre-malignant lesions of cervical cancer in a very early stage.

It involves the application of a drug called delta aminolevulinic acid in the cervix., which after 4 hours becomes protoporphyrin IX, Fluorescent chemical that accumulates in damaged cells, which allows to eliminate with a special laser beam, only the structures impregnated with it.

Ramón Gallegos said that in the clinical phase of the therapy, 420 patients from Oaxaca and Veracruz were treated, in addition to the 29 from Mexico City, who were infected by HPV, had pre-malignant lesions in the cervix, or both. The researcher worked in photodynamic therapy in different neoplasms (melanoma, breast and cervical cancer)) in the last 20 years.

So they applied photodynamic therapy

In the first part of the treatment – in which the women of Oaxaca and Veracruz participated – the results were encouraging. In people who only had the virus uninjured, HPV was deleted to 85%; in patients who had HPV lesions, had a similar efficacy and 42% of those who had non-HPV lesions were successful.

The application of the technique to the 29 women from Mexico City also had a very encouraging effect. They were applied twice the concentration of aminolevulinic acid delta. The treatment was performed twice with a 48 hour interval. They also performed the reviews and diagnostic studies. HPV was eliminated in 100% of the patients who carried it without lesions, 64.3% in women with HPV and lesionsand 57.2% in those who had lesions without the virus.

The IPN researcher indicated that the results "open the possibility of making treatment more effective, when using the scheme that takes care of the situation of the patients ".

Therapy has no side effects

Before applying photodynamic therapy to patients, colposcopy, cytology (papanicola), hybrid capture, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and biopsy were performed to diagnose premalignant lesions and / or HPV infection. At the end of the treatment, the studies were repeated and The efficacy of the therapy has been confirmed, which is safe and free from side effects.

The expert explained that, with the scheme applied to the capital, also had a positive effect on the elimination of pathogenic bacterial strains. "A percentage of women had infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis (sexually transmitted) and / or Candida albicans, which were eliminated with treatment at 81 and 80 percent respectively." The bacterial flora that contributes to the health of the genital tract has remained virtually intact, "he said.
