Posadas, Misiones | NEA RURAL | Organized by the National Institute of Yerba Mate (INYM), health professionals participated (on November 22, 2018) in the Jornada de Divulgação Científica de Mateo e Saúde, which was held in the Vinolia space designed specifically for food events in Vitacura, Santiago de Chile, and on the spot they learned in detail the scientific studies that attest the functional properties and the protective effect of the infusion in metabolic diseases like diabetes, cholesterol and weight loss, with the expositions given by the biochemist Rafael Pérez Elizalde and by the Dr. Elio Soria.
The event brought together dozens of physicians from private clinics in Santiago, such as Clínica Alemana and Clínica Las Condes, as well as nutritionists from other institutions, to learn firsthand about the benefits of consuming this millennial herb, to clarify doubts with the public. scientific colleagues and knew to indicate to their patients the consumption of this herb as a coadjuvant in the treatment of metabolic diseases and in the control of excess weight.
The speakers addressed the positive effects of yerba mate on cardiometabolic risk, the risk of diabetes and the fight against overweight. Along with this, they demolished the myths about the risk of consumption of mate in breastfeeding and its effect on blood pressure and gastric mucosa.
"We did an investigation in Mendoza where we made a diet plan, accompanied by two liters of mate, replacing the two liters of water and collaborating a lot in weight reduction, for two or three real scientific reasons: one of them is that it acts on the nervous system central and diminishes the sensation of appetite – when a baby mate is usually not hungry – and another is that it helps in the elimination of fats that can be incorporated, together with a food plan, the incorporation of mate is a very important adjuvant " , said Dr. Perez.
The biochemist at the Maza University of Argentina presented a series of studies conducted at the University of Mendoza, which shows that ingestion of yerba mate – ideally above half a liter per day – is associated with a lower incidence of diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemia. In one of the investigations, there was a significant decrease in triglycerides and total cholesterol consuming daily mate prepared with 50-100 grams of yerba mate.
This finding is very relevant to the field of endocrinology. As stated by Dr. Verónica Mericq, endocrinologist of Clínica Las Condes.
"I thought it tackles a little-known and explored topic in Chilean medicine, and its effects seem to be in support of a healthy lifestyle," said Mericq.
Elio Soria, meanwhile, presented an investigation that shows that mate extract can modify the cellular metabolism of spleen cells to promote resistance to the toxicity produced by the arsenic present in the water we consume.
Along with this, they have reported that it has been scientifically proven that consumption of mate enhances serotonin – such as consumption of chocolate, for example – so that yerba mate has entered the food list of happiness. Along with this, its high concentration of polyphenols, possesses great antioxidant power and cellular protection.
Dr. Soria said that in medicine the career is taught a lot about the pathologies and their treatment and little about maintaining health through prevention and herbal medicine. In this line, the medical students who participated make a positive evaluation regarding the exposure of Argentine professionals.
"As a student, I think it is important to address the issue at universities, medical seminars, as there is still a lot of ignorance about the benefits of this herb," said Laura Hinrichs , a medical student at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.
The consumption of yerba mate in Chile has increased in recent years in the hands of urban consumption, linked to sport and well-being. In 2017, imports increased by 20% and currently the neighboring country represents one of the main export markets of Yerba Mate Argentina, with about 4 million kilos marketed per year, which places it first among countries. that matters fellow in the region.
However, the lack of knowledge about its benefits and the myths about its possible impacts still persist. There are still people who think that consuming mate can affect the pressure, put the baby at risk in the case of pregnancy or lactation or that can produce acidity, all due to the scarcity of information that we have in the national environment. In this context, INYM has been implementing different actions to generate more knowledge about food and to add consumers, among which the first Mate herb and Health Day stand out.
