Beijing, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) – About nine out of 10,000 people are living with HIV / AIDS in China, a rate that is low compared to other countries, according to the National Health Commission (CNS).

Sexual intercourse is the main channel of contagion in China, the health authority said in a statement released on Friday.

However, China was able to prevent the spread of HIV through blood transfusions, with almost zero registered cases of infection, and through the use of other blood products, added the CNS.

Wang Bin, an official with the disease prevention and control commission, said injecting drug-related HIV transmission was also controlled, and the reported cases in 2017 reported a decrease of 44.5. percent compared to 2012.

In terms of the transmission rate from mother to child, it decreased from 7.1% in 2012 to 4.9% in 2017, Wang added.

The commission has stepped up efforts to encourage HIV testing for infections, Wang said, which said a total of 200 million people in China had taken HIV tests last year, double that of 2012.

About 80.4 percent of people living with HIV / AIDS in China received anti-virus treatment in 2017, with a success rate of more than 90 percent, the official said.

Noting that prevention and treatment are still arduous tasks, Wang said the CNS will step up efforts to alert and educate people at risk of contracting HIV, promote comprehensive services for testing, consultation, diagnosis and treatment. and mobilize social forces, including businesses, funding agencies, health organizations and volunteers to participate in the fight against the disease.

According to a joint assessment by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, UNAIDS and the World Health Organization, there will be about 1.25 million people with HIV / AIDS in China by the end of this year, and 80,000 new infected each year.
