A little less than a thousand kilometers are between Epuyén, the city of Chubut, where the outbreak of the harshest hanta variety erupted, and Concepción, the Chilean city whose university develops a vaccine against the virus and a treatment for the disease. On Wednesday, a month and a half after the first death, the Secretary of Health of the Nation, Adolfo Rubinstein, was in the mountain range of Chubut, when the doctor of Biological Sciences Oliberto Sánchez, of the University of Concepción, wrote a note in which he has made himself available to offer the antidote.
Chile is a unitary country. There is a national minister for each area and "ministerial regional secretariats", which everyone knows by its acronym Seremi. Argentina has a Secretary of Health of the Nation but the subject is occupied by the provinces and there are no federal strategies for serious social issues like this one of the hantavirus or for others, like the crisis of the secondary school, by case.
It is very difficult to isolate the outbreak of a virus. There is no border that filters it, especially if it is transmitted by animals and their human carriers, which spread it in the air.
The hanta strain that lives in the cordilleras region of Río Negro (and the whole area) is transmitted from person to person, something that, if we knew with certainty, few discovered.
There remains a terrible lack of information, now that there are eleven dead, 29 people affected and many suspected cases.
Although it is in Río Negro, Neuquén and Chubut where the virus is most dangerous, there is no national laboratory here to study hanta. Chile has, precisely, in Concepción, one of the largest cities in the south of that country.
In the Argentine Society of Infectology and the Malbrán Institute there are renowned specialists, but in the area affected by the spread of the hanta there are others that coexist each summer with those affected by the virus. To name them would be to compromise them (they did not even publicly leave the complaint), but there is discomfort in the medical community of Bariloche and El Bolsón due to the lack of consultations with those who were all those years in the trench of hanta patients.
President Mauricio Macri spent this week in Chubut. In Puerto Madryn he opened a wind farm and made an excursion to observe the dolphins. On the other side of the province, there was a hanta outbreak, but that did not talk about it.
Wisky and Barbeito
El Bolsón had a hanta outbreak 22 years ago. The national deputy of Cambio Sergio Sergio Wisky was doctor in the city. When he realized he had the virus, he told Carolina Guasco, who was his wife at the time, to take him to Castro Rendón hospital in Neuquén, where he lived.
Wisky made a political career in radicalism: he became mayor of El Bolson and Miguel Saiz's government official. In fact, he owes his health in part to the former minister and former government candidate César Barbeito: in his car he traveled to Neuquén to be treated in November 1996.
Blessed by President Macri, who received him on his long vacation in Villa La Angostura, Wisky won wrestling for Cipolletti's mayor, Aníbal Tortoriello, who has lubricated his relationship with Alberto Weretilneck in recent weeks.
The governor denies, but since Juntos can not have a candidate in Cipolletti, the idea of betting on Tortoriello's re-election is gaining momentum, especially since in Juntos no one is encouraged to run as a candidate.
Weretilneck has time until February 15 to file his forced re-election candidacy. Between that date and the election of April 7, 51 days will pass: is it sufficient time for the Justice to be issued in three possible instances: Electoral Justice, Superior Court of Justice and Supreme Court?
Campaigns and investigations shine because of their absence in Argentina, while Chile develops a vaccine and tries a treatment for the patients.
Wisky, governor of Macri in 2019, was saved 22 years ago thanks to his friend César Barbeito driving him to the Castro Rendón hospital in Neuquén.
