Energy consumption drops 3.4% year-on-year in October

Demand for electricity fell 3.4% year-on-year last October, the lowest mark of the month since 2012, the Electric Development Foundation (Fundelec) reported yesterday.

In the same sense, the consumption of the Federal Capital and the suburbs of Buenos Aires showed a significant drop in both Edesur (-3.1%) and Edenor (-4%), while the rest of the country also registered the same trend: 3.3%, according to provisional data from the Electricity Market Management Company, Cammesa.

Fundelec explained that the drop in demand was in residential, commercial and industrial users across the country: October was the second lowest consumption for the entire year and the lowest mark for that month since 2012 in nominal terms.

Thus, after a quarter (June, July and August), with a 5.8% year-on-year increase, the most bimonthly fall (September-October) of the year was recorded in percentage terms (-4.4% ), while in the first ten months of 2018, demand increased by 1.6% over the same period in 2017.

In October 2018, the total net demand of the Wholesale Electricity Market (MEM) was 9,875.1 GWh; with a year-on-year reduction of 3.4%; however, there was a month-on-month growth of 1% compared to September 2018.

Of the total consumption in October, 40% (3,928.8 GWh) belonged to residential demand, while the commercial sector represented 29% (2,920.4 GWh) and the industrial sector, 31% (3,025.9 GWh).

In addition, year-on-year, residential demand fell -1.3%, while commercial demand fell -4% and industrial demand showed an even greater fall: -5.7%.

Even so, after ten months of the year, demand for electricity increased by 1.6%.

Regarding consumption by area of ​​the country, in October, 18 provinces and companies reported falls: Catamarca (-46%), San Luis (-12%), San Juan (-11%), Chubut (-7%) (-7%), Cordoba (-5%), Santiago del Estero (-5%), Eden (-4%), Edes (- 3%), Entre Rios (-3%), Santa Fe (-2%), La Pampa (-1%), Mendoza (-1%) and others.

In turn, there were 7 promotions in the electric needs of MAM in Chaco (9%), Santa Cruz (9%), Corrientes (3%), Formosa (3%), Missions (3%), Edea , Edelap (1%), among others.

Meanwhile, Río Negro and Salta maintained their level of consumption year-on-year, explained Fundelec.

In addition, he pointed out that the average temperature in October was 17.8º C, while in the same month of the previous year was 18.2º C, and the historical, 17.3º C.

In this context, the local generation presented decrease compared to October 2017, being 10,371 GWh this month against 10,587 GWh in the same period of the previous year. As in recent months, import share was low when meeting the demand: 25 GWh were imported until October 2018, against 13 GWh imported in October 2017.
