A few years ago virtually all users were clear about what the mid-range archetype was: Mobile phone of about 200/300 euros, low or medium power and with a fair photographic section. It is precisely what we find in terminals like the Xiaomi Mi A2, the Samsung Galaxy A6, the Huawei P20 Lite and derivatives, mid range at its best.
The arrival in this scenario of other alternatives, such as the Samsung Galaxy A9, the Nokia 7 Plus or the BQ Aquaris X2 Pro, raises the price of this medium range, arriving in some cases to comfortably exceed 500 euros. Apart from the land on which OnePlus and Xiaomi reign, there are villages inhabited by users who are willing to spend a little more money on a traditional mid-sized subscription.
Google wants to receive these users, with Google Pixel 3 Lite and Pixel 3 Lite XL. It is about the first time Google is introduced in this field, in a medium-sized market governed by Xiaomi. The subject deserves a few words, so I contacted some of my colleagues in the world tech, to contrast opinions and perspectives on this new "G" average range.
At what time and how would these Pixel 3 Lite and 3 XL Lite arrive?
According to rumors, Google Pixel 3 Lite and Google Pixel 3 Lite XL would arrive in the month of January 2019. With the mid-high range 2017 reinforced, and new proposals from manufacturers in the ovenGoogle would like to start the year with these two devices. Regarding the technical specifications of these two terminals, we find several points to discuss.

Google Pixel 3 Lite and Google Pixel 3 Lite XL would have chiaroscuro in their specifications, since achieves the fact that the base versions start from 32 GB. However, considering that Google's goal is to present your Pixel at the lowest possible price and the strategy of including unlimited storage in Google Photos, your plan may make sense – although it's not yet justified.
The Pixels have always criticized their "scarce" hardware and will not be less in the middle generation. However, in this range, the camera, updates and user experience are the three weakest points, and the Google Pixel 3 Lite has all the ballots to stand out in these aspects.
On the contrary, we celebrate this the camera sensors are the same as the older siblings, then we would find a very similar photographic experience – which is not identical, due to the limitations of the processor. This would be the highlight and differential of the Pixel 3 Lite, since would offer the best photographic experience in this price range.
Something good: the Pixel 3 Lite is needed for good photography in the mid-range
Why is the mid-range still mid-range? Because at night I find it unusable. But it is not only the business of Xiaomi, I have not seen a cell phone for less than € 600 that makes good night shots. pic.twitter.com/QG78AkXYUB

I'll be direct the cameras of the traditional mobile phones of signature between 200 and 600 euros are not good. It may be enough for most users, that you are of the opinion of for 600 euros I bought a cell phone and a DSLR, but there is a gap in the middle range on a photographic level that no one has been able to fill. As far as specs, sensors and camera modules are improved, It is not understandable that a cell phone of 400, 500 or 600 euros presents images worse than a high range of several years ago.Look where you are.
New photographic comparison episode in which the average € 369 band of 2018 loses by a landslide against the 2013 flagship in captured light, detail and color reproduction. Google is the only company capable of putting an end to the bad taste in our mouths that the cameras leave us in the middle. Arriving at certain prices, it is not enough to "do it right" or with the photographs "enough". That a mid-range cell phone should not correlate with the minimum requirement is when judging your camera. By 2019, it's time for the mid-range to jump and be at least at the highest levels of a few years ago.
On the other hand, updates are another major weakness of the mid-rangeand having a Pixel 3 Lite that updates in the pace of the flagship is undoubtedly an added value. In Android, we have rather internalized that if we want fast updates, we have to pay for a high-end -And in some cases, even these are not updated quickly. Pixel Lite would bring two years of system upgrades and three years of mid-range security updates.
Something bad: They will not be as fast as Pixel 3, and I'm not talking about the processor
Among the things that no one fixes while buying a smartphone, is the technology of internal memory. Currently, the mid-range uses eMMC memory modules, rather slow compared to UFS memory modules. Not even terminals with UFS-compatible processors, such as the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE and its Snapdragon 710, incorporate these memories. This technology was implemented on Android in 2015 with the Samsung Galaxy S6, so it's time for the medium-high reach to do it.
This will not be the case with Google Pixel 3 Lite, since the 32 GB makes it clear that, except for surprise, memories are not Google's priority. This will be the main reason why the Google Pixel 3 Lite will be slower than its older siblings. Regardless of, if we do not make a constant transfer of heavy files or install large blocks of applications, the differences between memories can be invaluable to the average user.
The opinion of Andro4all and some of my colleagues
My opinion on the arrival of these Pixel 3 Lite and Pixel 3 Lite XL is clear: welcome is any terminal that adds value to the market. Google repeats the formula by betting on the camera and the software for the hardware. A strategy that will not catapult you top sales, but allow users who want to enjoy the best Android pie experience and a camera at the height of the greatest. The possibility of having this photographic experience at a reduced price can cover one of the few remaining voids in the middle range. Again, Google Pixel 3 will not be the best in its segment, but it will be the best alternative for lovers of clean software, updates and the camera. A risky bet that can work.
Christian Collado, one of my battle companions on Andro4all, and lover of clean roms, seems to share some of the points I've commented earlier.
Personally, I think it's a good idea because of the progress they will make for the current mid-range. After all, in this segment of 400-500 euros there are already mobile phones of all kinds (very powerful, well designed, with huge batteries … And almost all of Xiaomi), but so far none for this price could offer the Pixel Camera experience, and I think those Pixel Lite fill that gap, maybe the last one left in that segment.
Again on camera tone and user experience. The average range has a range to cover called cameraand we seem to agree that these two terminals would meet a need that the market has been demanding for years.
So knowing that they will have exactly the same sensors as Pixel 3, and the same advances in Google in terms of computer photography, I think it's nice to finally have the option of having the best camera without having to spend +1,000 euros -e that without entering the "Pixel experience", which also adds course points. Of course, I also think that if the availability of the normal Pixel is limited, the latter will be even worse and I think it will be difficult to see it in markets like Spain or the US.
Érika García, editor of CNET, tells us what many will be thinking: this camera can be won in the market, although on land of OnePlus and Xiaomi it is quite difficult to introduce this concept, whose expected price will not fall below 400 or 500 euros.
I sincerely believe that for 500 € that I think will be what it will cost, I do not know if they will enter the market. To get started what they should do is more marketing because they have a PRODUCTTAZO that is little known, not to mention the exclusivity of Orange as the carrier. So, starting from the base that a cucumber like normal and costs, it is not clear to me with the high average range so brutal that has the Oneplus or Xiaomi is a good idea. You can win the market with the camera, which I hope will be the same.
Iván Linares, Editor-in-Chief of El Androide Libre, also seems to see a success in Google's proposal, while adding that the hardware may be a limitation in a scenario where Xiaomi, Honor and Huawei are able to offer much by little.
I see this as a wise decision because I believe that every manufacturer should offer an appropriate product at different prices without losing the essence that characterizes it. Apple's strategy of only distributing high-end tracks only works for Apple mentioned above and for how long; So it's good that Google introduces its Pixel a little cheaper. The problem is the stiff price competition on Android, as Google will not be able to compete for hardware (Xiaomi, Huawei and Honor have no competitors). But as Google managed to give the system a characteristic touch, I believe a Pixel of 400 euros may be worth even compared to a Xiaomi Mi 8. Details such as excellent camera, image processing, system cleaning, updates immediate … are part of an aura of value that no other manufacturer has.
Antonio Sabán editor in Engadget and Gentata, also tells us his opinion on these two Google Pixel 3, with enthusiasm about the arrival of camera functions in the mid-range, but adding something more skepticism and doubt before the possible high price they would get.
Failing to know more details, I do not quite understand Google's strategy with the rumor of Pixel 3 Lite. If the price finally reaches the market share of € 500, I would seem a strategy similar to Apple's with the iPhone XR. The difference that the Pixels do not enjoy popularity among mass public, and no one expects a cheaper terminal.
By itself, having a cheap 3 Pixel seems like a great idea, and a way to change the average range forever, taking the processing and the advantages of HDR + and Night Sight to a segment that has been neglected by Xiaomi for years. Doing it at such a high price, when there are already very good terminals with "decent" and pure Android camera, like the Mi A2, do not see a commercial gap.
Those who pay € 500 expect high-end discount, but good in every way, not just the camera. If I discovered a Snapdragon less than 710, for example, Fortnite might not work, and I do not think that's permissible. The economical Pixel would make sense for the price of the Nexus 4's entry, but playing the camera trick instead of power: all mid-range but high-end camera or almost high. Otherwise, "there is no market".
Nicolás Rivera, editor of Hypertext, also took a few minutes to comment on the arrival of these Google Pixel 3 Lite and Google Pixel 3 XL Lite to the mid-range scenario. It tells us that software is not always enough to convince buyers, but that introduce Pixel in the middle range in enrichment to the market, introducing the benefits of these devices beyond the high range.
Putting several Pixels in the middle range has, in my opinion, a very clear objective: to make the benefits of Pixel spread beyond the higher limits. That is: people who spend 900/1000 euros on a cell phone mostly go to Samsung or Apple. They do not even consider a Pixel. And it has nothing to do with being better or worse – that's another debate – but with brand awareness and confidence. Entering the middle band – if they do it well – is a way to expand and publicize that brand, its benefits, etc.
In addition, it is difficult to penetrate certain (emerging, for example) markets with high-priced products. A mid-range Pixel can help in that sense. In the US, they do not have a lot of strong competition, so they can do well with an intermediate Pixel. In Europe and Asia, however, they have Xiaomi in front of her, who is being very aggressive. It is true that Google has the software to enrich your product (camera, performance, autonomy, etc.), but we have seen that this is not always enough. It will be interesting to see the approach they take to beat Xiaomi and company – assuming they want to do it, of course.
We have seen that, in general, opinions revolve around the camera. Introducing the benefits of a terminal of 1,000 euros in the middle range is well received, although there are potential threats. It will not be easy to enter this terminal in the hole you want to occupy, in a land dominated by Xiaomi, and being the mobile division of Google something that does not enjoy great popularity among consumers.
There is a good atmosphere when it comes to getting the Google Pixel 3 Lite from some members of the technology community. However, there are many obstacles that must be faced, given the fierce competitiveness we find in these ranges.
On the other hand, there are those who think that for the more than 400 euros provided for these Pixel, it is quite plausible to think of alternatives like OnePlus or XiaomiIn that case, personally, I would take the words of Ivan Linares. A Google Pixel 3 Lite may be a better alternative than a top of the "cheap" range,, if the camera and software are priority. We may not have Snapdragon 845, but the performance of these Pixels – in terms of daily use, far from the benchmark – should not be far off, and the photographic experience should be markedly better. Difficult. Google comes at a difficult time, but raising an interesting situation, and comes to fill a gap that did not exist. Have a Pixel camera for half the price, renouncing the most important characteristics of his older brothers.
Medium and mid range need to improve your cameraand finally, we will have an alternative for the most demanding. The debate is about whether this will be enough to make the Pixel 3 Lite an interesting alternative for the end user, who despite giving importance to the camera, usually prevails aspects such as design or gross power when buying a phone. We will have to wait until January to see how Google's proposal materializes, but we are certainly faced with one of the biggest changes in this band, a situation never seen before.
