Doctors disagree on moderate consumption

BUENOS AIRES, 24 (NA). – A coordinated research by Argentine cardiologist Ricardo López Santi, recently presented at the World Congress of Cardiology in Dubai, puts the focus of discussion of the medical community on whether moderate intake of wine is recommended for cardiovascular health care.
The Argentine Federation of Cardiology (FAC) endorsed this study approved by the Research Ethics Board of the University of the Queen (Canada) in which the variability of alcohol perceptions and their effects on cardiovascular health by physicians is investigated. Argentines
These are preliminary results that will be filled with data provided by professionals in Canada and Uruguay who are also conducting the research.
The research was carried out with 745 professionals in total: 671 cardiologists, 18 specialists in internal medicine, 17 general practitioners and other 36 specialties.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the recommended daily measure, technically known as UBE (Standard Drinking Unit), contains about 10 grams of alcohol, equivalent to a glass of 100 ml wine, half a kilogram of beer 250 ml . ml. or a glass of 30 ml whiskey; and measures differ by two UBE per day for men, or one per woman per day, due to their metabolism.
Concerning perceptions about moderate alcohol intake, 35% of physicians (257/737) consider it to be beneficial for cardiovascular health, 36% (264/737) state that only wine offers such benefits. 24% (179/737) consider that any consumption is harmful and 5% (37/737) have other opinions.
In conclusion, out of every four physicians, three recommend that their patients drink it in moderation and fully counter-indicate it.
Regarding the knowledge of consumption metrics and patterns, professionals are not satisfied with current knowledge.
Only 41% know the concept of "standard drink". 83% consider that this metric is confusing and consumption patterns are not well known and 85% should be standardized in all countries.
The level provides a critical starting point for future research and shows the need to optimize the sources of knowledge.
