MultiChoice to dispense 2194 employees

Johannesburg – More than 2,000 employees of MultiChoice have been served with recession charts, as the broadcaster plans a "realignment" of business.

Officials were briefed on the decision on Friday by MultiChoice Group executive director Calvo Mawela.

The 2194 employees affected by the restructuring come from MultiChoice (call center) and walk-in center customer service.

The pay-TV operator said that the restructuring was part of the strategic realignment of its customer service model, since customers preferred to engage "digitally" with the company.

"Realignment is a response to the changing behavior of our customers, who are increasingly moving away from traditional voice calls and call center visits and adopting new self-service and digital technologies to engage with the company," said Mawela .

The Union of Information Technology and Communication (Ictu) believes, however, that MultiChoice acted illegally.

"The employer has just notified employees, today (Friday), who identified employees who will be dismissed. The union has not been officially informed, which makes the process illegal, "said Thabang Mothelo, Ictu's media director.

Mothelo said the union will seek an urgent engagement with MultiChoice to update them.

"The employer scored on Friday to make the announcement, which shows some tendencies of cowardice not to deal with the consequences of their actions."

Mawela said it was a difficult decision for the pay-TV operator.

"As part of a comprehensive support program agreed upon with unions and other employee representatives forums, we will offer voluntary compensation packages, welfare support and financial planning, and continue to pay for current studies for MultiChoice Foundation-funded employees and development of relevant skills, among a range of benefits to affected employees, "said Mawela.
