Mazda is fulfilling the promise it made when the new CX-5 debuted, finally offering its compact crossover with a diesel powertrain.

The Skyactiv-D engine will be offered in the Signature finish of the Mazda CX-5 2019, which means customers can choose between two high-end engines: a 2.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine and this 2.2-liter diesel engine liter with two turbochargers. This new engine makes only 168 horsepower, which is actually less than the 2.5 liter base (non-turbo) engine, but the diesel has a significant amount of torque with 290 lb-ft. The peak power reaches 4,000 rpm, but torque reaches 2,000 rpm, which means that this CX-5 should feel like a blast off the line.

This is likely to be paired with a six-speed automatic, but customers can only get four-wheel drive for the CX-5 Signature diesel engine. The fuel economy figures for this powertrain were shared, and they are a decent hurdle on the other CX-5s with a city rating of 27 MPG and a rating of 30 MPG, leading to 28 MPG combined.

The CX-5 Signature AWD, diesel engine, will return buyers $ 41,000 and the car is offered in four colors: black, white and the exclusive colors of Mazda, Machine Gray and Soul Red.

Shoppers looking for an alternative powertrain in this segment have only a few options, such as the RAV4 Hybrid, which gets 40 MPG combined, an upgrade of 12 MPGs more than this CX-5, yet offers only 219 horsepower. A fully loaded Toyota RAV4 Limited Hybrid AWD will return buyers $ 39,615 (pre-destination), which means customers have a tough decision to make when it comes to alternative fuels: many MPGs with a Toyota or a ton of torque at Mazda . We can not wait to bring you face to face in the near future.
